IWT suspension by India, contrary to humanitarian principles: SITE President

KARACHI, Apr 04 (APP):President of the SITE Association of Industry, Abdul Rehman Fudda has strongly criticized India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, terming the move unethical and contrary to humanitarian principles.
In an interview with APP, SITE Association president said the historic treaty, signed on September 19, 1960, by Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistani President Ayub Khan, has remained a cornerstone of water-sharing cooperation between the two countries for over six decades.
Fudda noted that after 65 years of smooth implementation, India’s step towards practical non-compliance undermines the spirit of international agreements. He emphasized that water treaties are fundamentally humanitarian in nature and must not be used as political tools.
“In today’s evolving global landscape, countries that prioritize power over treaty obligations risk losing the support of the international community,” he added.
He further warned that India could face isolation both domestically and internationally for disregarding agreements established in the presence of international guarantors.
Highlighting the importance of diplomacy, Fudda stressed that political disputes should be resolved through dialogue. “Using water as a weapon to exert pressure is unacceptable under any circumstances,” he concluded.
