ISLAMABAD, Jan 20 (APP):The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday issued a notice to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on a petition against the notification to withdraw the schedule of local government elections in the federal capital and sought a response by January 27.
Justice Muhammad Azam Khan heard the petition of Jamaat-e-Islami Islamabad Ameer Nasrullah Randhawa. The petitioner’s lawyer told the court that earlier we had challenged the Local Government Amendment Ordinance. Now the Election Commission has withdrawn the schedule of local government elections.
The lawyer said that the election was held in 2015, the period of which expired after five years. The law says that new elections are to be held within 120 days after the period expires. The notification to withdraw the election schedule should be declared null and void and an order should be issued to hold local government elections.
He further requested that a similar petition is scheduled for January 27, and the notification should be suspended till then.
The court rejected the request for issuing an immediate injunction and adjourned the hearing.
