A suspect in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) police custody was injured after his accomplices opened indiscriminate fire on a police team in the jurisdiction of Shahzad Town Police Station while officers were returning from a recovery operation based on his disclosure.

ISLAMABAD, Jul 25 (APP): A suspect in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) police custody was injured after his accomplices opened indiscriminate fire on a police team in the jurisdiction of Shahzad Town Police Station while officers were returning from a recovery operation based on his disclosure.
A police official told APP on Saturday that the police team was escorting the detained suspect, Khaliq Akhtar, after recovering evidence on his identification when armed accomplices, who had been lying in wait along the route, launched an attack on the police party.
During the exchange of fire, the suspect sustained injuries after being hit by bullets allegedly fired by his own accomplices, while the police personnel remained unharmed due to the use of bulletproof jackets and other protective measures.
The injured suspect was shifted to a hospital for medical treatment, the official said.
He said Khaliq Akhtar was a proclaimed offender with a criminal record and was wanted by Islamabad Police in multiple cases, including attempted murder, drug trafficking and other heinous offences.
Police also recovered an illegal pistol along with ammunition from the suspect.
The official said search operations were underway to arrest the attackers and other accomplices involved in the assault on the police team.
