Heavy rain forecast for Potohar, KP from Sept 14-17
ISLAMABAD, Sep 14 (APP):National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Monday warned of heavy thunderstorms and intense rainfall across the Potohar region and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from September 14 to 17, with Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Murree, Galiyat and adjoining hilly areas among those likely to be affected, raising the risk of urban and localised flooding, flash floods, strong water flows in streams and landslides.
According to an alert issued by the NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), the anticipated weather system could produce intense rainfall over a short period, potentially triggering sudden flooding in low-lying and urban areas.
The affected areas in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa include Dir, Swat, Buner, Malakand, Shangla, Battagram, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan and Peshawar, along with adjoining areas.
The NEOC’s assessment models indicate the possibility of a rapidly developing weather system capable of generating heavy rainfall within a short duration, particularly in vulnerable areas.
The authority cautioned that intense rainfall in mountainous regions could cause rapid rises in water levels in streams and nullahs, flash flooding and landslides, posing risks to communities, roads and other infrastructure.
The NDMA advised citizens to remain vigilant during periods of heavy rain and avoid low-lying areas, streams, nullahs and water channels, besides refraining from unnecessary travel.
People living in vulnerable areas have also been urged to take precautionary measures in view of the possible threat of flooding and landslides.
The authority asked the public to follow the latest weather forecasts, advisories and emergency instructions issued by the local administration, Pakistan Meteorological Department and NDMA.
