Govt reaffirms commitment to combat obesity

ISLAMABAD, Mar 04 (APP): The Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination on Wednesday marked World Obesity Day with a renewed commitment to tackling obesity as a growing public health challenge in Pakistan.

Addressing an event which was held to observe the World Obesity Day, Federal Minister of State for Health Dr. Malik Mukhtar Ahmad Bharath urged to focus on prevention, early intervention and improved access to care for obesity.

He underscored the seriousness of the issue, stating that obesity is emerging as a major public health concern in Pakistan and is contributing significantly to the country’s burden of non-communicable diseases.

He stressed that addressing the problem requires a comprehensive national strategy focused on prevention, early diagnosis and improved healthcare access.

He welcomed continued collaboration with stakeholders to enhance awareness and promote healthier communities nationwide.

Secretary Health Hamed Yaqoob Sheikh highlighted that obesity is a complex, chronic disease influenced by biological, environmental and social factors, and should not be viewed merely as a lifestyle issue.

He noted that through initiatives such as the Prime Minister’s diabetes programme, the ministry is working to improve understanding, reduce stigma and expand access to person-centred care.

Director General Health Dr. Abdul Wali Khan emphasized the importance of science-based policy measures and coordinated action across sectors to effectively address the rising prevalence of overweight and obesity among both adults and children.

He said strengthening public awareness and integrating obesity prevention into existing health frameworks are key priorities for the Ministry.

The event marked an important step in reinforcing the government’s resolve to address obesity through evidence-based strategies and multi-sectoral collaboration, aligning with global efforts to promote healthier populations and reduce the burden of chronic diseases in Pakistan.

The event was attended by Danish Ambassador to Pakistan Maja Mortensen and representatives from Novo Nordisk.
