Govt initiates roadmap to improve Pakistan’s governance indicators
ISLAMABAD, Sep 08 (APP):Federal Minister for Law and Justice Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar on Tuesday directed preparation of a comprehensive roadmap to improve Pakistan’s performance on key governance indicators, with immediate, medium and long-term measures.
He was chairing the first meeting of the Prime Minister’s Committee on Key Governance Indicators, attended by Minister of State for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik, Secretary Finance, Secretary Cabinet Division and other relevant federal and provincial officials.
The meeting was briefed on Pakistan’s recent macroeconomic stabilization efforts, credit ratings and their linkage with governance indicators.
It was informed that Pakistan’s credit rating had shown positive progress over the past two years following macroeconomic stabilization measures.
The meeting was further informed that data used in credit rating assessments was generally around two years old, resulting in a delay in reflecting the impact of ongoing reforms and improvements in international ratings.
The briefing highlighted the interconnectedness of economic stability, improved credit ratings, lower borrowing costs and stronger governance.
The minister directed a detailed review of the sub-components of governance indicators and their assessment methodology. He called for identification of practical and measurable reforms suited to Pakistan’s prevailing circumstances and institutional structure.
He also directed that relevant international and regional best practices be examined, stressing that models from other countries should not be adopted mechanically and must be aligned with Pakistan’s own circumstances and institutional requirements.
The meeting decided to constitute a Sub-Committee comprising subject specialists to work on improving governance indicators. The committee will review key aspects and submit its recommendations and comprehensive roadmap to the main committee within one week.
Senator Azam also directed preparation of a focused interim report containing immediately implementable measures, with clear responsibilities for federal and provincial levels under the proposed reforms.
He further directed that, alongside improvements in governance, measures aimed at enhancing Pakistan’s international standing and country credibility should also be proposed.
