ISLAMABAD, Oct 01 (APP):Federal Minister for Human Rights Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar on Thursday said the government was committed to protecting the rights and dignity of older persons and ensuring that they received care, respect and support in society.
In his message on the International Day of Older Persons, observed on October 1, the minister said senior citizens had contributed to their families and society through their experience and services.
He said respect for elders was part of Pakistan’s cultural and religious values and society had a responsibility to uphold it.
Tarar said the Islamabad Capital Territory Senior Citizens Act, 2021 provided a framework for protecting the rights and welfare of older persons.
He said the responsibility for the well-being of senior citizens was not limited to legislation. Families, communities, government institutions and civil society also had to play their role in ensuring that older persons were supported and included in society.
The minister said their dignity, well-being and right to live with respect should remain a shared responsibility of all segments of society.
