Gilani calls for stronger parliamentary cooperation among Asia-Pacific countries

ISLAMABAD, Oct 5 (APP):Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Monday underscored the importance of stronger parliamentary engagement and coordination among Asia-Pacific countries to address shared challenges and promote common interests.
Participating in a meeting of the Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group held on the sidelines of the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Arusha, Tanzania, he highlighted the need for collective parliamentary action on issues affecting the region, particularly climate change and its far-reaching socio-economic consequences.
The meeting considered key matters relating to the Asia-Pacific region and deliberated on important items before the Assembly, including vacancies, emergency items and nominations for the Drafting Committee.
The participants considered a proposal to include climate change and its effects as an emergency item in view of the increasing frequency of climate-induced disasters, environmental degradation and their impact on communities and economies across the region.
The meeting also discussed matters relating to the ASEAN+3 Group and other issues concerning the forthcoming Assembly proceedings.
The Chairman Senate was accompanied by members of Pakistan’s parliamentary delegation, including Senators Amir Waliuddin Chishti, Zarqa Suharwardy Taimur, Anusha Rahman Ahmad Khan and Agha Shazaib Durrani, and MNAs Sharmila Farooqui, Pir Syed Fazal Jillani, Syed Hafeezuddin and Barrister Aqeel Malik.
