PESHAWAR Oct 14 (APP): Khyber Pakthunkhwa Governor, Engr Iqbal Zafar Jhagra said here Friday that financial empowerment of poor segment of the society especially women folk through Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), was the significant achievement of PMLN Government and distribution of Rs400 billon among registered BISP beneficiaries in last eight years was a proof of its success.

The Governor expressed these views as chief guest on occasion of presentation ceremony of BISP Progress Report 2014-16 presented by Chairperson, BISP Ms Marvi Memon here at Governor House.

BISP Chairperson, Ms Marvi Memon, Consul General of Iran, Vice Chancellors of University of Peshawar and Shaheed Benazir Income Support Program, officials and BISP women beneficiaries of KP and Fata attended. The Governor and BISP Chairperson also distributed certificates among BISP beneficiaries on this occasion.

The Governor said BISP through its various programs was playing vital role in raising the socio-economic conditions of poor and vulnerable people of the country and providing assistance to about 5.7 million deserving people carried significant importance.

The Governor said disbursement of Rs400 billion among BISP beneficiaries during last eight years reflected its overwhelming success.

The governor said rehabilitation of TDPs of Fata was underway and efforts were being made for dignified returns of all TDPs by end of November this year.

The Governor said BISP has made great achievement in Fata and its positive role in provision of financial assistance to deserving TDPs would highly be welcomed.

Welcoming the BISP progress report, the Governor said the government was working on different strategies and plans for socio-economic emancipation of poor segment of the society and BISP’s Waseela Taleem program in this regard was of key importance.

He said BISP role in alleviation of poverty, economically empowering of women and promoting literacy in the country was praiseworthy.

Terming BISP as the brainchild of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, the Governor lauded the PMLN government for investment in the Waseela-e-Taleem programme of the BISP to financially support the education of children of beneficiary families to increase the ratio of school enrollment and retention.

The Governor said KP has faced the brunt of terrorism with bravery and steadfastness adding Operation Zarb e Azab has broken the backbone of terrorists and destroyed their hideouts. He said peace was being restored at fast pace and urged people to inform police and law enforcement agencies in case of presence of suspected element in their surroundings so that timely action may be taken.

The Governor expressed satisfaction that the BISP under the leadership of its chairperson was working tirelessly to ensure transparency in its affairs and to enhance the utility of the program in coordination with all stakeholders.

The Governor commended that the BISP had not only become the biggest social welfare program in South Asia but also one of the largest and effective programs in the world bringing change in the lives of millions of people through financial support.
