ISLAMABAD, Nov 25 (APP):The Federal Constitutional Court of Pakistan (FCCP) has dismissed an appeal challenging the Gutka Act, declaring gutka a serious threat to human health.
A two-member bench headed by Justice Hasan Rizvi heard the case on Tuesday. During the proceedings, Justice Hasan Rizvi remarked that gutka is extremely dangerous for human health and is made from rotten areca nut. He noted that gutka is even more harmful than cigarettes and is a leading cause of oral cancer.
Justice Rizvi further observed that hospitals are now commonly treating patients suffering from illnesses caused by the use of gutka.
The court questioned Advocate Shah Khawar about why his client was pursuing the appeal. The lawyer responded that he had not received any instructions from his client. Justice Rizvi remarked that if that was the case, the court could summon the client and have him open a packet of gutka inside the courtroom.
After hearing all arguments, the court dismissed the appeal filed against the Gutka Act.
