ERC holds 7th review as monsoon crisis deepens across Pakistan
ISLAMABAD, Jul 30 (APP):The Emergency Response Committee (ERC) on Thursday held its seventh session at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) headquarters to review the flood situation, rescue operations, relief efforts and preparedness measures across Pakistan, with federal and provincial authorities pledging stronger coordination to deal with emerging challenges.
The meeting, held on the directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, was chaired via video link by Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Prof Ahsan Iqbal.
Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari attended the session at the National Emergencies Operations Centre (NEOC), while Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr Musadik Malik, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, Federal Minister for Water Resources Mian Muhammad Mueen Wattoo, Punjab Health and Emergency Services Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique, chief secretaries of provinces and regions, Chairman NDMA and senior officials joined physically and virtually.
According to officials, the committee reviewed the overall monsoon situation, including recent incidents, human casualties, infrastructure damage, rescue activities, relief operations and rehabilitation efforts in affected areas.
The NEOC also briefed participants on the latest hydrological conditions, river flows and potential weather related hazards that could affect vulnerable regions in the coming days.
The committee assessed response measures taken by federal ministries, provincial governments and district administrations and acknowledged the efforts of rescue agencies and local authorities in protecting communities, restoring essential services and providing assistance to affected populations.
Participants stressed the need for seamless coordination among all stakeholders to ensure a swift and effective response to any worsening weather situation.
Prof Ahsan Iqbal directed all relevant departments to maintain operational readiness, strengthen inter agency coordination, continue proactive preparedness measures and accelerate relief and rehabilitation work in areas impacted by heavy rains and flooding.
