ECP discusses LG polls arrangements in Balochistan

Prospect of expats' participation in next general elections becomes brighter

ISLAMABAD, Jan 31 (APP):A meeting was held here at Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday to discuss the arrangements
of local government elections in Balochistan.
The meeting which was chaired by ECP Secretary Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad decided that the final announcement of delimitation will be made on March 30.
It was informed that the commission will accept objections on delimitation during February 16 to March 2, while the decisions on all objections will be made by March 17.

The meeting was informed that the delimitation process for union councils and wards has been started from January 31, which will be completed by February 14. The initial draft of the delimitation will be shared on February 15.
The meeting was informed that the term of local government institutions was expired on January 27, 2019 and since then the ECP remained in touch with the provincial government of Balochistan.
As during the period, the Balochistan government didn’t make any new legislation therefore the ECP has decided to hold the local government elections in Balochistan under existing law.
Under Section 219(4) of Elections Act 2017, it is the constitutional responsibility of ECP to conduct local government elections in provinces within 120 days on expiry of period of local bodies.
The ECP is also constitutionally responsible to hold all local government elections under article 140(A) of constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
