ISLAMABAD, Jul 01 (APP): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday adjourned the hearing of disqualification reference against National Assembly Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan until July 15, after his lawyer submitted a stay order issued
by Peshawar High Court pertaining to the case.
A three-member bench of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), headed by Member Sindh Nisar Durrani,
had convened to hear the case.
During the proceedings, Omar Ayub Khan’s counsel submitted a stay order; however, Justice (retd) Ikramullah, Member KP, stated that the Peshawar High Court did not specify a new date in the stay order. Consequently, the Commission directed its legal team to seek clarification from the Peshawar High Court. Notably, Omar Ayub Khan was absent from the hearing.
The bench emphasized that the reference forwarded by the National Assembly Speaker must be decided within the stipulated time-frame. Additionally, the opposition leader was instructed to submit a response in the assets declaration case, in which Omar Ayub faces allegations of discrepancies in his nomination papers and the information provided to
the returning officer.
Speaker of National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq had forwarded the disqualification reference against Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan, based on a petition by PML-N’s Babar Nawaz, who had lost to Ayub in Haripur in the 2024 elections.
