ECP adjourns hearing of disqualification references till Sep 28

Prospect of expats' participation in next general elections becomes brighter

ISLAMABAD, Sep 6 (APP): Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Tuesday adjourned the hearing of various disqualification petitions including Panama Papers till September 28.

The ECP also summoned chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan on September 28, on a petition pleading Imran’s disqualification on alleged concealing and making false assets claims and forwarding false information in his election nomination papers.

Shahnawaz Dhiloan, the petitioner had sought disqualification
of Imran Khan for concealing his offshore company. In the reference, Shahnawaz Dhiloan alleged that Imran Khan had set up offshore company , Niazi Services, to conceal his
assets details.

The ECP also clubbed the corruption in PTI funds case with Panama Papers cases.

The ECP adjourned the hearing of disqualification reference filed against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif and Finance Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar till September 28.

The counsel of the prime minister Salman Butt, in his arguments, pleaded before the court for additional time to study the case due to nonavailability the case papers. The lawyer representing the opposition parties opposed the plea as it will cause delay.

Former Attorney General Muhammad Salman Butt sought time for submitting a detailed reply.

The disqualification references were filed by chief of Awami Muslim League Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and Yasmin Rashid, a former candidate of PTI, who contested elections against
PM during last general elections.

The Commission adjourned the hearing of disqualification
reference filed against PTI senator Liaquat Khan Tarakai till
September 28.

The petitioner, Awami National Party’s Ms Bushra Gohar, pleaded the action against proposer and seconder of Liaquat Khan Tarakai as both had recommended Tarakai for
contesting Senate election despite knowing that Tarakai owned offshore companies.

Meanwhile, the ECP also dismissed yet another disqualification reference against Nawaz Sharif due to non-appearance of the petitioner, Waheed Kamal.

The ECP also took up the reference filed against MNA Captain ® Safdar for his disqualification. Former Attorney General Salman Butt represented Captain ® Sadfar before the Commission.

Lawyer of Nabzada Salahuddin said Safdar has challenged the jurisdiction of the Commission. Lawyer of Safdar was directed to file response before September 28.

The ECP adjourned the hearing of MNA Jehangir Tareen’s disqualification case till September 28.

The ECP directed the lawyer of Jehangir Tareen to submit response to allegations before next hearing of the case.

Faisal Chaudhry, the lawyer of Nawabzada Salahuddin Saeed told media persons that Safdar had submitted incomplete answer in ECP.

Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Raza Khan said that PTI challenges ECP’s authority of hearing cases in petition filed by Akbar S Baber whereas advocates ECP’s powers to hear in PM’s disqualification case.

Hamid Khan said the nature of both cases is different in both cases.
