KARACHI, Oct 22 (APP): The prestigious American College of Surgeons has conferred honorary fellowship to Dr Adib Rizvi of Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) for his distinguished services in the field of surgical sciences, public services and for pioneering the transplant movement in the country.

An official of the Institute said here on Saturday that the honorary fellowship was conferred to Dr Rizvi at the annual congress of the College held at Washington DC, according to information reached here.

He said that this year honorary fellowship was awarded to five eminent surgeons hailing from various parts of the world who have made extra ordinary contributions in their respective branches of surgery.

The globally renowned surgeons who received fellowship were from Australia, Colombia, France and Japan besides Dr Rizvi of Pakistan who earned the singular honor for his country.

In its citation the College recounted the meritorious services rendered by Dr Adib Rizvi by setting up SIUT in Karachi which not only provides state of the art medical treatment to the people totally free of cost but also one of the growing urological and transplant centres of the region.

Citation also lauded the pivotal role which Dr Rizvi has played in his country by bringing a legislation to prohibit commercial transplantation.

The American College of Surgeons established in 1903 is the largest professional organisation of surgeons in the world with 80,000 members on its roll.

Each year a group of globally renowned surgeons are awarded Honorary Fellowship. The process is quite selective and competitive as in its entire history the College has awarded honorary fellowship to 445 surgeons.

By winning the honorary fellowship, Dr Rizvi has joined the very selective and an exclusive group of surgeons bringing a great honor to his country and medical fraternity.

President College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan, Prof Zafar Ullah Chaudhry was also present in the ceremony.
