Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar Thursday extended warmest felicitations to Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed on his election by consensus as the new Secretary General Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the 23rd extraordinary session of OIC Council of Foreign Ministers held in Jeddah.

ISLAMABAD, Aug 27 (APP): Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar Thursday extended warmest felicitations to Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed on his election by consensus as the new Secretary General Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the 23rd extraordinary session of OIC Council of Foreign Ministers held in Jeddah.
In a post on X, he wished the Secretary General all the success in fostering Islamic unity, peace and collective action in pursuit of shared aspirations. “Look forward to working closely with him in cultivating strengthened partnerships and constructive cooperation among the Ummah,” he added.
He said, “May his tenure be a harbinger of renewed energy and vigor in making the OIC a platform for collaborative dialogue and collective action.”
Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, 66, a Mauritanian diplomat and former foreign minister, succeeds Chad’s Hussein Ibrahim Taha, who has served as OIC secretary-general since late 2021 and whose term will officially end in November.
Ould Cheikh Ahmed served as Mauritania’s foreign minister from 2018 to 2022, and as the UN secretary-general’s special envoy for Yemen from 2015 to 2018.
He also previously served as deputy special representative of the UN secretary-general, and as resident coordinator and humanitarian coordinator for the UN Support Mission in Libya in 2014.
