Doctors stress infection prevention to protect patients

ISLAMABAD, Oct 19 (APP):Health experts have called for stronger infection prevention and control measures in hospitals, healthcare facilities and communities to reduce the spread of infections and protect patients, healthcare workers and the public.
Marking International Infection Prevention Week 2026, doctors emphasized the importance of hand hygiene, environmental cleanliness, safe medical practices and public awareness in preventing healthcare-associated infections.
“Infection prevention is a shared responsibility that begins with simple but essential practices, including proper handwashing, maintaining hygiene and following safety protocols in healthcare settings,” Dr Anwar Naeem, a health expert said.
He highlighted that healthcare-associated infections can increase complications, prolong hospital stays and place additional pressure on healthcare systems.
He stressed that consistent implementation of infection prevention and control protocols can help reduce these risks and improve patient safety.
“Healthcare workers must strictly follow infection control guidelines, while hospitals should ensure staff training, access to hygiene facilities and regular monitoring of safety practices,” Dr Naila Saleem, a medical professional said.
She underscored the importance of responsible antibiotic use, explaining that preventing infections can help reduce unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions and contribute to efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance.
She urged healthcare institutions to strengthen staff training, promote a culture of safety and encourage patients and their attendants to follow recommended hygiene practices.
She called for coordinated efforts by healthcare professionals, hospital administrations, policymakers and the public to make infection prevention an integral part of quality healthcare and safeguard communities against preventable infections.
