ISLAMABAD, Dec 03 (APP): Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq Wednesday said that ensuring a dignified life and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities is a shared responsibility of both the state and society.

He expressed these views in his message on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed worldwide on December 3.

The Speaker described persons with disabilities as an important, active and respected segment of the community.

He said that with proper facilities, accessibility and equitable opportunities, they can excel in every sphere of life and bring honour to the nation.

Ayaz Sadiq said that the United Nations’ observance of this day reflects the global resolve to promote full inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities.

He pointed out that millions of Pakistanis with disabilities continue to face challenges stemming from limited accessibility and societal barriers.

The Speaker called for strict implementation of job quotas in both public and private institutions, stressing that economic independence and employment are crucial for their empowerment.

Reiterating Pakistan’s commitment under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), the Speaker said the country is bound to ensure equal rights and eliminate discrimination.

He affirmed that Parliament will continue to legislate and strengthen policies aimed at protecting the rights of persons with disabilities.

Highlighting key initiatives, he said that for the first time in national history, the Constitution of Pakistan has been published in Braille. Additionally, ramps and accessibility centers have been established in the National Assembly to facilitate persons with disabilities.

The Speaker said that individuals with disabilities are achieving distinction in various fields at both national and international levels.

He underscored the need to further expand opportunities in education, technical and vocational training, digital access, healthcare and employment.

Integrating persons with disabilities into the mainstream, he added, is essential for accelerating Pakistan’s social and economic development.
