CDA removes 58 illegal structures along Expressway
ISLAMABAD, Sep 19 (APP):The Capital Development Authority (CDA) on Saturday said it had taken action against 58 illegal and non-conforming construction units along the Islamabad Expressway Service Road East and retrieved around 290 kanals of its land from encroachers in Sector E-12.
According to the authority, 34 of the construction units were located along the Sohan-Iqbal Town stretch and 24 along the Korang Bridge-Korang Police Station and Gulberg Greens stretches.
The action was carried out by the CDA’s Building Control Section and Enforcement Directorate in coordination with the district administration and Islamabad Police.
The CDA said several commercial buildings along the service road had been found in violation of building by-laws, being used for non-conforming purposes and lacking mandatory fire-safety arrangements.
It said notices had been served on the owners and occupants, asking them to rectify the violations, obtain the required approvals, make fire-safety arrangements and clear applicable government dues. Enforcement action was subsequently taken against those who failed to comply within the stipulated period.
Further illegal and unauthorised construction units have been identified for action, while a survey of the remaining areas is under way, the authority said.
CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad inspected the Expressway Service Road East project on Saturday and was briefed about the progress of construction, rehabilitation and infrastructure works.
He directed officials to remove administrative, legal and field-related impediments and ensure that the project remained on schedule.
The chairman also directed the relevant formations to ensure compliance with approved building plans and fire-safety requirements, including emergency exits and firefighting equipment. Traffic and safety arrangements should also be maintained during construction to minimise inconvenience to commuters, he said.
The Expressway project is aimed at improving road connectivity and traffic flow between Islamabad, Rawalpindi and adjoining areas.
Later, the CDA chairman visited Sector E-12 and reviewed development works, including roads, drainage and other municipal infrastructure.
Officials told him that around 290 kanals of CDA land had been retrieved from illegal occupants and encroachers during the ongoing anti-encroachment operation.
The chairman directed officials to prevent re-encroachment on the recovered land and ensure its use in accordance with approved plans and the development requirements of the sector.
He also ordered regular field inspections and directed officials to resolve technical and administrative issues affecting the pace of development works.
Member Estate, Member Planning, Director General Works, Deputy Commissioner Islamabad, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General), Assistant Commissioner, project directors, consultants, contractors and other CDA and district administration officials were present during the inspection.
