CDA-DWP approves Rs19.3bn New Islamabad Convention Centre

ISLAMABAD, Nov 20 (APP):The Capital Development Authority Development Working Party (CDA-DWP) on Thursday approved the long-anticipated New Islamabad Convention, Expo and Exhibition Centre (NICEEC) — the most significant project on the agenda — at a cost of Rs19.371 billion.
The approval was given during the 78th CDA-DWP meeting chaired by Chairman CDA and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa. Senior officials from the Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Division, Ministry of Interior, Finance Division, CDA Board members and project consultants attended the session.
CDA spokesperson told APP that, the NICEEC will be a multifunctional, state-of-the-art complex capable of hosting national and international conventions, trade exhibitions, cultural festivals and large-scale events. The project is expected to strengthen Islamabad’s position as a regional hub for commerce, innovation and cultural exchange.
He furter informed that the centre has also been selected as the venue for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in 2027, making its timely completion a strategic priority. The project has been given a completion timeline of 18 months, with directives to ensure international standards in design, quality and functionality.
Chairman Randhawa, in a news release, said the new convention centre would fill a long-standing infrastructural gap in the federal capital. “This facility will provide Islamabad with a world-class venue for global engagement and major conferences,” he remarked, directing concerned departments to adhere strictly to deadlines and ensure uncompromised quality.
While several other projects were also approved — including six new pedestrian bridges costing Rs574.682 million.
The construction of these bridges will reduce accidents, improve traffic congestion and provide better facilities for school children, elderly and persons with disabilities.
