United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), with financial support from the Government of Canada, handed over specialized equipment to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to strengthen Pakistan’s efforts against human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

ISLAMABAD, Jun 12 (APP): United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), with financial support from the Government of Canada, handed over specialized equipment to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to strengthen Pakistan’s efforts against human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
An official told APP on Friday that the handover ceremony was attended by High Commissioner of Canada to Pakistan Tarik Ali Khan, Director General FIA Dr. Usman Anwar and UNODC Representative in Pakistan Troels Vester.
The official said the equipment package included portable forensic document examination kits, analytical workstations, laptops, data storage solutions, networking equipment and office infrastructure support.
According to the official, the equipment would enhance FIA’s investigative, analytical and operational capabilities in dealing with increasingly complex cases of trafficking in persons (TIP) and smuggling of migrants (SOM).
The official said the support was provided under a Canada-funded programme being implemented by UNODC since 2021 to strengthen Pakistan’s response to human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
Under the initiative, UNODC has provided FIA with specialized training, technical assistance, victim protection programmes, awareness campaigns, infrastructure improvements and operational equipment to support anti-trafficking efforts.
Representatives of Canada, UNODC and FIA reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening Pakistan’s capacity to prevent and combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling while protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
They emphasized the importance of enhancing institutional capacity and supporting a stronger criminal justice response through international cooperation and modern law-enforcement tools.
The official said the partnership reflected a joint commitment to addressing transnational crime and strengthening FIA’s operational capabilities to effectively tackle trafficking and migrant smuggling networks.
