KARACHI, Dec 8 (APP): Commissioner of Karachi, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui has suggested incorporation of basic civic facilities in the World Bank funded “Strategy for Transformation of Karachi”.
Talking to a World Bank (WB) delegation that called on him here Tuesday, the commissioner acknowledged that the objectives as well as terms of reference of the scheme turned it into an essential requirement for the citizens of the metropolis.He, however, told the WB delegation that also included Jaaffar Friaa and Peter A Ellias to ensure that adequate attention is paid towards basic civic facilities alongwith essential requirements for
any urban center.”This is to ensure that developmental transformation actually
manifests in improved life quality of all inhabitants of the metropolis without any distinction,” said Commissioner of Karachi.On the occasion the WB officials said an underway study has
identified significant loopholes in the existent infrastructure and varied development schemes for Karachi. The lacunae was attributed to lack of coordination among varied
civic agencies and relevant institutions.The Karachi Transformation Strategy, they said encompasses infrastructure development inclusive of essential requirements for any
modern day urban centre.For the purpose, WB officials said all stakeholders in the
metropolis have to be included in efficient implementation of the strategy.
To this the Karachi Commissioner said the government is conscious of the fact and a Divisional Coordination Committee has been constituted at commissioner office for the purpose.Series of mega-schemes ranging from water supply to efficient
sewerage system and modern transport facilities are underway in
Karachi and government has initiated a mechanism so that people may
actually benefit from these, said Commissioner Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui.
He hoped that WB funded study will further streamline schemes and
development programs already launched by the government in past one to
two years’ period.
