Baig family’s calligraphic exhibition “The Call of the Divine” opens at National Art Gallery

ISLAMABAD, Jan 06 (APP):The Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), in collaboration with the National Heritage and Culture Division, on Tuesday inaugurated a calligraphic exhibition and artist talk titled “The Call of the Divine” at the National Art Gallery, Islamabad, showcasing the works of renowned artists Razwan Baig, Shazian Baig, and Shanzay Baig.
The exhibition presents a captivating blend of traditional and contemporary calligraphy, highlighting Quranic verses and themes rooted in Pakistani and Islamic cultural heritage.
The artists, belonging to the distinguished Baig family, are internationally exhibited practitioners known for their significant contributions to Islamic and contemporary art.
Renowned visual artist Jamal Shah, the chief guest, formally inaugurated the exhibition and lauded the artists for their exceptional craftsmanship and creative depth. He praised their unique synthesis of classical calligraphic traditions with modern artistic expression, stating that their work not only preserves the sacred heritage of Islamic calligraphy but also reinterprets it for contemporary audiences.
In his remarks, Jamal Shah emphasized the spiritual power of calligraphy in Islamic art, noting that it serves as a profound medium to convey divine messages, cultural identity, and aesthetic beauty.
He also stressed the importance of promoting Pakistani art at national and international platforms.
Director General PNCA M. Ayoub Jamali, while addressing the audience, said the exhibition was a reminder of the enduring relevance of calligraphy in today’s world. “Today’s gathering invites us to reflect on the timeless beauty of calligraphy and its role in uniting tradition with contemporary expression,” he remarked.
Razwan Baig, a distinguished scholar, collector, and researcher of Islamic art, is widely recognized for his contemporary Kufic script works.
He has studied under eminent calligraphers from Turkey, Baghdad, and Pakistan, and his collection has been exhibited at prestigious institutions including the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Shazian Baig, an Islamic artist and researcher, has trained under master calligraphers from Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria. Alongside his artistic career, he is pursuing medical studies and serves as a researcher of artefacts in the Barlas Collection.
Shanzay Baig, an accomplished Islamic artist, geometrist, sculptor, and marquetry specialist, draws inspiration from historic Islamic monuments. Her work integrates traditional Islamic crafts with architectural inquiry, and she currently serves as the archival catalogue specialist for the Barlas Collection.
The exhibition will remain open to the public till January 08 at the National Art Gallery.
