ISLAMABAD, Feb 7 (APP): The Department of Archaeology and Museums has said that the World War I (WWI) Monument in Islamabad does not fall under the purview of Antiquities Act 1975 and thus cannot be legally termed as a protected site.
In a statement issued here, the department said though the WWI Monument is located within the limits of Islamabad Capital Territory, it is not a protected side under the relevant Act.
Previously, the Department of Archaeology and Museums made efforts to bring the Monument under formal protection. However, due to the non-availability of revenue and other legal prerequisites, it could not be notified as a protected site.
Prior to the relocation of the Monument, the Department of Archaeology and Museums was consulted for necessary advisory guidance in line with internationally recognized best practices for commemorative and historical structures.
“However, the issuance of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) by the Department was not required as the monument does not fall under the category of protected antiquities,” it said.
The department emphasized that the monument possesses cultural and historical significance, and any handling of the memorial should be undertaken with due care, dignity, and conservation sensitivity to preserve and safeguard its historical value.
The memorial, under the supervision of Capital Development Authority, will be re-erected near the Northern Bypass roundabout close to Rehara village. The move is expected to improve the public access and visibility of the monument.
