LAHORE, Oct 27 (APP):The air quality in the provincial capital is becoming toxic as air quality index (AQI) was recorded 312 points.
AQI was recorded in Faisalabad 540 points, Gujranwala 371, Multan 364 and
Bahawalpur 250. Medical experts have directed the citizens to use masks and take
precautionary measures.
It should be noted that low-speed winds blowing from the northeast (NNE)
were affecting the air of Lahore and central Punjab through the agricultural
areas of eastern Punjab and Haryana.
The incidence of burning crop residues in these Indian areas has increased
in recent days, due to which particles were entering the air and were being
transported across the border through the winds.
Due to the speed of these winds being run by 4 to 9 kilometers per hour, the
pollution particles accumulate near the ground instead of scattering, due to which
the air quality in Lahore and its surroundings has come into the unhealthy category.
The air quality is likely to remain between 230 and 280 AQI on average.
Anti-smog operations are being intensified, anti-smog squads are active
in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur and Gujranwala.
Senior Minister Punjab Marriyum Aurangzeb said that outdoor activities
were banned in all educational institutions.
Meanwhile, health experts have raised alarm about the dire consequences
of prolonged exposure to such high pollution levels, warning of severe health
risks such as respiratory diseases, cardiovascular conditions, cancer, and
even premature death.
