Any cut in Pakistan’s water flow to hit economy hard: Dr Zigón

ISLAMABAD, Jun 30 (APP):Dr. Roxolana Zigón, Head of the Scientific Centre for International and Strategic Studies at UWC, Moscow, on Tuesday said any reduction in water flows to Pakistan would have serious consequences for the country’s agriculture, food security and overall economy.
Addressing the international seminar on Indus Waters Treaty titled “IWT 2026: An Instrument of Peace and Regional Stability,” she said Pakistan has repeatedly lodged protests with India over unusual fluctuations in the flow of the Chenab River.
She noted that the construction of dams in India’s upper riparian areas could contribute to regional instability if concerns over water management are not addressed through established treaty mechanisms.
Presenting Pakistan’s perspective, Dr. Zigón said the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 remains fully valid and legally binding. She warned that any continued unilateral suspension of the treaty could have serious security and humanitarian implications not only for Pakistan and India but for the wider South Asian region.
She described the Indus Waters Treaty as one of the most successful and durable transboundary water-sharing agreements in history, adding that it continues to serve as a global model for the peaceful management of shared water resources.
Dr. Zigón also highlighted the importance of the Permanent Indus Commission, describing it as an effective institutional mechanism for dialogue, cooperation and the peaceful resolution of disputes between the two countries. She emphasized that water cooperation is essential for ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region.
