AIOU academic council approves major academic reforms in 69th meeting

In a significant step towards academic excellence, the 69th meeting of the Academic Council of Allama Iqbal Open University, (AIOU) chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Nasir Mahmood, approved a number of major academic reforms, including new academic programs, revised policies and measures to strengthen the University’s academic framework.

ISLAMABAD, Jun 30 (APP): In a significant step towards academic excellence, the 69th meeting of the Academic Council of Allama Iqbal Open University, (AIOU) chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Nasir Mahmood, approved a number of major academic reforms, including new academic programs, revised policies and measures to strengthen the University’s academic framework.
To expand access to science education through distance learning, the Council approved the launch of FSc Pre-Medical and FSc Pre-Engineering programs from the Autumn 2026 Semester. The new programs would provide greater educational opportunities for students aspiring to pursue science education through the University’s flexible learning system, said a press release issued here on Tuesday.
The Academic Council approved renaming the BS Mass Communication program as Bachelor of Studies in Media and Communication Studies. In addition it approved ten Certificate Courses in Mass Communication along with several new Associate Degree and BS programs in various disciplines to meet emerging educational and professional needs.
The Council also approved a minimum CGPA of 3.00 as the eligibility criterion for the award of Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals at future convocations. The decision aimed to recognize and encourage outstanding academic achievement while promoting a culture of excellence among students.
The Council further approved significant changes to the structure of MPhil and PhD programs. Under the revised policy, each faculty would offer one MPhil and one PhD program with multiple specializations. The initiative was designed to improve student management, enhance academic quality and ensure the efficient utilization of the University’s academic resources.
All decisions approved by the Academic Council would be submitted to the Executive Council for final ratification.
Addressing the meeting, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Nasir Mahmood reaffirmed the University’s commitment to promoting quality, modern and student-centered education.
He said the reforms approved by the Academic Council would further strengthen academic standards, enhance institutional effectiveness and equip students with the knowledge, skills and competencies needed to meet future academic and professional challenges.
