29,172 students get admission on merit in PU

LAHORE, Nov 1 (APP): As many as 29,172 students got admission
in PhD, M.Phil, Master and BS Honor programmes in all 74 faculties
in the Punjab University on merit for the academic year 2015-16
with no increase in tuition fee.
Chairman admission committee Prof Dr.Liaqat Ali who is also
Registrar told APP here Sunday that first time a record number
of 720 students were given admission in various PhD programs
in different faculties while 2612 students successfully joined
M Phil programs. He said that 7781 students were enrolled under
master and 3473 in BS Honor. He said a total of 14,586 students
were studying in morning session and same number in afternoon
and evening programmes.
The Punjab University, the oldest seat of learning, has
emerged as one of the best public universities having maximum
number of faculties and disciplines with the lowest fee for
postgraduate and undergraduate courses, he added.
He said,”VC Prof Dr,Mujahid Kamran restructured several
faculties of various teaching departments, raised new constituent
colleges, inducted teachers on merit and colleges were affiliated.
The number of students increased manifolds with the highest ever
strength in the country, he said.
He said despite high standard of education the PU charged
the lowest semester fee not only in the country but also in
the world, ranging from Rs 3,265 to Rs 8,987 for postgraduate
programmes even much less than the majority of schools
operating in the city.
Dr.Liaqat Ali said decades old syllabi and courses
were being revised periodically and updated to meet future
challenges. He said not a single student was admitted out of
merit during his tenure.
“The Punjab University has a unique privilege to be the
only educational institution in the country that is imparting
knowledge to students in all disciplines ranging from social
science, humanities, science, computer,law and foreign
languages,including Hindi and French”.
Director,Institute of Communication Studies,Dr.Nosheena
Saleem when contacted told APP that 486 admissions were given
in ICS in different programs and the question of merit violation
does not arise at all as VC had introduced transparent merit
based admissions.
About hostel accommodation,Chairman Hall Council Dr.Abid
Hussain said that all 5769 students were allotted rooms in 29
hostels strictly in accordance with merit.He said no complaint
has sofar been received from any quarter about merit violation
which speaks of good governance.
