Tarar offers relief package for families of journalists martyred, died during service
PESHAWAR, Sep 22 (APP):Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar on Tuesday offered announcing a relief package for the families of journalists who lost their lives in the country’s war against terrorism and those who died while serving the profession.
The minister made the announcement during his visit to Peshawar Press Club, where he met representatives of the journalist community.
President Peshawar Press Club M. Riaz, General Secretary, Alamgir Khan and senior journalists, including Shamim Shahid, Mehmood Jan Babar and others were present on the occasion.
Attaullah Tarar said Peshawar Press Club was one of the country’s most distinguished press clubs, particularly because it had also been targeted in a suicide bombing.
He said Peshawar’s strategic importance during the Afghan war had brought renowned journalists from Pakistan and abroad to the city to report on developments in the region.
The minister said the journalist community of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly Peshawar, had played an important role in covering the war against terrorism and made significant sacrifices while reporting on terrorism-related incidents.
Paying tribute to journalists who lost their lives while covering terrorism-related incidents, Information Minister said he wanted to announce relief package for the families of martyred journalists as well as those who died during service.
He asked the office-bearers of the Peshawar Press Club to prepare a list of such journalists and share it with him within a week.
The minister also offered to revisit Peshawar next week to receive the list and discuss the matter further.
Tarar said he would increase his visits to Peshawar and other cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to meet journalists and help address the problems being faced by the media community.
He also assured journalists of launching a health insurance scheme for newsmen across the country.
He said the newsmen of Peshawar can also use studio of Radio Pakistan Peshawar for recording of podcasts.
On this occasion, Federal Minister issued directives to Director Peshawar Radio to make arrangements for allowing newsmen to utilize technical facilities for their professional use.
Earlier, the Information Minister cut a cake at the Peshawar Press Club lawn to formally inaugurate the Peshawar office of WeNews.
