Governor reviews progress on Northern Bypass, directs timely completion

PESHAWAR, Jun 23 (APP):Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi on Tuesday visited the Northern Bypass Camp Office here to review the progress of the ongoing Peshawar Northern Bypass project.
During the visit, Member National Highway Authority (NHA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ashfaq Ahmad briefed the Governor in detail on the project’s implementation status, ongoing construction work, and pending issues.
The Governor directed that high construction standards must be ensured in all circumstances and emphasized that the aesthetic value of the city should be preserved through the construction of flyovers and reinforced earth walls.
He instructed that completed portions of the project should be opened for traffic immediately to facilitate the public. He also said that an inauguration ceremony for one phase of the project would be held in July.
Governor Kundi said that he would take up the issues facing the project with the Federal Minister and the Chairman NHA to ensure timely resolution.
He assured full cooperation regarding security arrangements and stressed that tree plantation should be carried out along the project route.
He said that the Peshawar Northern Bypass would play a key role in improving transportation and boosting trade activities in the region, adding that rising traffic pressure in the future makes the project’s timely completion essential.
The Governor further said that the federal government should treat development projects in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on par with those in other provinces to ensure swift resolution of issues.
Officials were informed that the 30-kilometre-long project consists of five packages and passes through Peshawar and Khyber districts, with work on bridges and underpasses progressing rapidly.
It was further briefed that the project is targeted for completion by October 2026, while an additional Rs 8.4 billion is required, including an urgent release of Rs 4 billion for uninterrupted progress.
Federal authorities have also directed early completion of the project. NHA officials confirmed that construction work would continue despite security challenges.
General Manager Construction KP NHA, Ishtiaq-ul-Haq, was also present during the visit.
