PESHAWAR, Jun 25 (APP):Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi on Thursday visited the central 9th Muharram procession originating from Naeem Shah Chowk Saddar and reviewed security arrangements put in place for Muharram-ul-Haram.
The Governor lauded the efforts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, civil administration, and religious leaders from both Shia and Sunni communities for ensuring effective arrangements for the sacred month.
Talking to media representatives, he said the police had made excellent security arrangements across the province, particularly in Peshawar, to ensure that Muharram and Youm-e-Ashur passed in a peaceful environment.
He urged followers of all schools of thought to promote mutual respect, unity and cooperation.
The Governor said directives had already been issued to ensure the provision of all possible facilities for mourners participating in processions and religious gatherings.
Later, the Governor visited the Supreme Command Post at Kohati Gate, where Deputy Commissioner Peshawar Sanaullah briefed him on security and monitoring arrangements.
He was informed that Muharram processions and majalis were being continuously monitored through modern surveillance cameras and that around 90 percent of such events were being held within the Walled City areas.
The Deputy Commissioner informed the Governor that more than 11,000 security personnel had been deployed across Peshawar during Muharram and also briefed him on the route and security plan for the central Ashura procession.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Kundi said personnel of all line departments performing duties during Muharram deserved appreciation.
He said that security threats from hostile elements remained high this year and reiterated that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been one of the provinces most affected by terrorism, while security forces and police continued to render immense sacrifices.
The Governor also visited the central control room established at the Supreme Command Post.
Later, he visited the Integrated Command and Control System at Police Lines, where Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Mian Saeed briefed him on the security monitoring system.
The CCPO informed the Governor that more than 600 cameras were being used to monitor Muharram processions and gatherings, while security surveillance through modern cameras was also underway in Peshawar, Kohat, Hangu, Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan.
Governor Kundi said the Safe City project was indispensable for maintaining law and order in the province.
He appreciated the services of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, saying the force was performing commendably despite limited resources.
He observed that salaries of police personnel in the province were lower than those in other provinces and said he would forward recommendations to the chief minister for an increase in police salaries. The Governor also assured the police force of his full support and cooperation.
