Governor calls for modern equipment, better resources for KP Police

PESHAWAR, Aug 21 (APP):Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi on Friday underscored the need to equip the provincial police with modern weapons, technology and additional resources to effectively combat terrorism, saying the force was playing a frontline role in maintaining peace despite facing extraordinary security challenges.
Talking to a 33-member delegation of Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) of Sindh Police undergoing training at the National Police Academy during their study visit to Governor House, the Governor said policing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was significantly different from other provinces due to the persistent threat of terrorism.
Led by Course Commander Muhammad Aurangzeb, the delegation attended an interactive session with the Governor, who welcomed the visiting officers and appreciated the growing participation of women officers in the police service.
Kundi said the KP Police had been at the forefront of the war against terrorism but still required modern weapons, additional bulletproof vehicles and advanced technology to counter emerging threats, including quadcopter attacks by militants.Recommendations had already been forwarded to the provincial government for improving the salaries of police personnel, he added.
He said the province faced multiple security challenges because of its long border with Afghanistan, while the Pakistan Army and FC were playing a vital role in border security. He stressed that all law enforcement agencies should be fully supported in the fight against terrorism.
Responding to a question, the Governor said terrorism originating from Afghan soil against Pakistan was unacceptable, adding that evidence had emerged of the involvement of some Afghan nationals in terrorist incidents in the province. He said that the repatriation of illegal Afghan nationals was continuing.
Highlighting the province’s economic potential, Kundi said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa possessed immense capacity for low-cost electricity generation as well as vast reserves of oil, gas and minerals.
He said the province also offered significant opportunities for tourism and religious tourism, which could attract domestic and foreign investment once lasting peace was restored.
The Governor said financial commitments made for the merged districts had not been fully honoured, including the promised annual allocation of Rs100 billion, creating difficulties in meeting development needs.
Speaking on education and health, he said no major public hospital or sports stadium had been established in the province during the past 13 years, while politically motivated appointments in universities had adversely affected the education sector.
Referring to regional security, Kundi said Pakistan had effectively responded to Indian aggression last year and credited the country’s civil and military leadership for promoting peace in the region.
Course Commander Muhammad Aurangzeb informed the Governor that it was the first national study tour of Sindh Police DSPs and thanked him for hosting the delegation at Governor House.
