Ghulam Muhammad Kasir’s distinctive poetry continues to touch hearts: Experts

PESHAWAR, Jun 07 (APP):More than a quarter-century after his passing, the verses of renowned Urdu poet Ghulam Muhammad Kasir continue to resonate with readers and listeners across Pakistan, proving that true poetry never fades with time.
In recognition of his enduring literary legacy, Hazara University Mansehra will host a national conference on June 11, bringing together poets, scholars, writers, and literary enthusiasts from across the country to celebrate the life and contributions of a man whose words captured both the beauty of human emotions and the realities of society.
The day-long event at Jinnah Hall will feature research presentations, research studies and critical discussions on his literary works, and a multilingual Mushaira dedicated to his memory.
For many participants, however, the gathering will be more than an academic exercise but it will be an opportunity to reconnect with a poet whose verses continue to inspire generations.
Born on September 4, 1944, in the remote town of Peharpur in Dera Ismail Khan, Ghulam Muhammad Kasir’s journey from a small corner of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to the forefront of Pakistan’s literary landscape remains a source of inspiration.
His talent first gained national attention when legendary poet Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi introduced him through the prestigious literary journal Fanoon in 1977.
From that moment, Kasir’s poetic voice began reaching audiences far beyond his hometown. His appearances in national Mushairas and literary programs on radio and television earned him admiration from people belonging to diverse backgrounds.
“What made Ghulam Muhammad Kasir unique was his ability to combine traditional poetic elegance with modern themes,” said Altaf Yousafzai, Chairman Urdu Literature at Hazara University Mansehra.
He said Kasir’s poetry explored love, human relationships, social concerns, and the complexities of contemporary life.
Readers found in his work a rare balance of intellectual depth and emotional warmth, he added.
Literary scholars believed that one of Kasir’s greatest strengths was his ability to express profound ideas in simple language.
Kasir’s poetry reflected the struggles, hopes, and aspirations of ordinary people, making his poetry both accessible and deeply meaningful.
Professor Dr. Abaseen Yousafzai described Ghulam Muhammad Kasir as a poet who introduced new dimensions to Urdu literature while remaining closely connected to society’s realities.
“Ghulam Kasir is one of the most celebrated poets of Urdu literature of modern era. His poetry is admired for its simplicity, emotional depth, and beautiful expression of love and human feelings” he said.
Through his verses, Kasir captured the joys and sorrows of life, making his work relatable to people of all ages. His poetic style is graceful and heartfelt, which has earned him a special place among Urdu poetry lovers.
“Kasir shahib wrote passionately about societies injustices, love and the pain of unfulfilled desires. His words often reflect deep emotions and create postive images in the minds of readers. The sincerity and elegance of his poetry make it timeless, and many of his poems continue to be quoted and recited across the Urdu-speaking world.”
Apart from romantic themes, Kasir also addressed social issues in his poetry. He spoke against injustice and inequality, using his pen as a voice for truth and freedom.
Abaseen Yousafzai said Kasir’s courage and commitment to expressing his beliefs made him not only a great poet but also a respected intellectual. Today, Ghulam Kasir’s poetry remains an important part of Urdu literary heritage and continues to inspire readers worldwide.
Despite achieving national recognition and receiving numerous literary honours, including the prestigious President’s Pride of Performance Award, Kasir remained known for his humbleness and simplicity.
Friends and admirers often recall him as a gentle personality whose modest nature matched the sincerity of his poetry.
Beyond poetry, Ghulam Muhammad Kasir also made valuable contributions to Urdu prose and television drama.
He authored five poetry collections, wrote memorable dramas for Pakistan Television, and represented Pakistan at literary conferences in the United States and other countries.
For many admirers, his greatest achievement lies in the lasting emotional connection he forged with readers and young poets.
Decades after his death in Peshawar on February 20, 1999, at the age of 54, his poetry continues to be quoted in literary gatherings, classrooms, and conversations among poetry lovers.
As scholars and writers are set to gather to honour his memory, Kasir’s legacy serves as a reminder that literature has the power to transcend time.
Experts said his words continue to inspire young poets, shape literary thought, and touch hearts ensuring that his voice remains alive in the rich tradition of Urdu poetry.
Altaf Yousafzai said that preparations for the Ghulam Muhammad Kasir conference has been completed and invitation letters to poets and others relevant stakeholders for participation issued to pay tribute to the national poet who ruled over people minds and hearts.
