PESHAWAR, Mar 17 (APP): The 10th meeting of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Committee was held here on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister, approving a significant project to convert solid waste into fuel.
The committee greenlighted a proposal to establish a Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) project in Peshawar under the PPP framework. The project is aimed at transforming waste management in the provincial capital by utilizing modern technology to process garbage into useful fuel.
Officials stated that the initiative would help reduce reliance on imported coal, leading to significant savings in foreign exchange. It is also expected to create numerous employment opportunities for the local population.
Briefing the committee, Muhammad Sohail Afridi highlighted the multifaceted benefits of the project. He stated that additional economic advantages would be realized through carbon credits and the supply of fuel for industrial use. “The project will be beneficial not only for the environment but also for the economy,” Afridi added.
The meeting was informed that the waste-to-fuel project would lay the foundation for a modern and sustainable waste management system in Peshawar. It is designed to substantially reduce the burden of waste on existing landfill sites and improve the overall environmental conditions of the city.
The RDF produced from the city’s waste will serve as an alternative fuel source, particularly for the cement industry, marking a significant step towards eco-friendly waste management. The project is anticipated to cut greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable practices.
Under the approved plan, material recovery and processing facilities will be established at the Shamshato landfill site. To ensure transparency and foster competition, the unsolicited proposal submitted by a private company will be opened to the market.
