TOKYO, Sep 12 (Kyodo/APP): The Japanese weather agency on Friday warned of heavy rains in the eastern and western parts of the country, urging residents to stay vigilant for lightning strikes, tornadoes, strong winds and hail.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said that heavy rain could cause mudslides and flooding in low-lying areas, as well as river overflows in western Japan around Hiroshima due to unstable atmospheric conditions.

In parts of Tokyo and surrounding areas on Thursday, torrential rain caused flooding, with some wards in the Japanese capital logging record downpours. Transport services including shinkansen operations and air traffic were also disrupted.

Up to 200 millimeters of rain is forecast for the Tokai region in central Japan and 100 mm in the Chugoku area, including Hiroshima, in the 24 hours through 6 a.m. Saturday.
