WASHINGTON, June 24 (APP): A US State Department spokesman on Thursday expressed sympathies over the killing of popular sufi singer Amjad Sabri, saying such acts violate the fundamental freedom of expression, religion and belief.
“The arts have long been a forum for new ideas for fighting against intolerance. And again, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and to the people of Pakistan,” spokesman John Kirby told a regular briefing in Washington.
He described the murder of the famous Pakistani singer as senseless.
The singer was gunned down in Karachi on Wednesday when he was on his way to a local TV station for appearance.His brother was wounded in the attack.
Amjad Sabri was son of famous Qawalli singer , late Ghulam Farid Sabri.
Terrorists in Pakistan’s tribal areas target Sufi shrines in the country.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has ordered an investigation into the attack and also announced 10 million rupees in financial support to the family of the singer.
The federal government will also bear expenses for the his children’s education.
