US govt. shutdown drives Trump to all-time high disapproval rating

NEW YORK, Jan 23 (APP):US President Donald Trump’s disapproval rating is at an all-time high amid a long government shutdown over Congressional Democrats’ rejection of his call for over $5 billion to build a wall along the border with Mexico aimed at stopping illegal immigration.
The CBS News poll showed that 66 percent of respondents want Trump to agree to government spending legislation without wall funding, compared to 52 percent who would like to see congressional Democrats accept a measure that includes funding for the structure.
Forty-three percent of respondents support the Democrats’ refusal to fund a border wall, according to the poll, while 31 percent back Trump’s stonewalling of any proposal that does not contain wall funding.
The poll found that 37 percent believe a wall is necessary to secure the U.S.-Mexico border from illegal immigration, while 61 percent indicated the border can be secured without it.
Those responses were split along partisan lines, with 78 percent of Republican respondents saying a wall is needed, and 90 percent of Democratic respondents saying it is not needed.Trump’s demand for funding for his long-promised wall along the southern border triggered a partial government shutdown that has left roughly 25 percent of federal agencies closed for 33 days and counting.
The Senate is set to vote on the president’s proposal to reopen the government, which includes $5.7 billion for wall construction, as well as temporary protections for certain immigrant groups. The Senate will also vote on a measure that would fund the government into February.
The Democrat-held House of Representatives has already passed bills to fund the government.Neither measure is expected to receive the 60 votes needed to pass the Senate, raising the prospect that the shutdown stretches into February.
