S. Korea’s number of cattle, pigs down in Q3

SEOUL, Oct. 24 (Xinhua/APP): The number of cattle and pigs raised in South Korea was down in the third quarter, with the number of chickens growing, statistical office data showed Friday.

Domestic farms bred 3,422,000 beef cattle in the July-September quarter, down 4.4 percent compared to the same quarter of last year, according to Statistics Korea.

The number of milk cows reared in the country shrank 2.1 percent to 372,000, and the figure for pigs fell 1.3 percent to 11,037,000.

The readings for layer and broiler chickens rose in single digits to 81,083,000 and 94,253,000 each, but the number of ducks slipped 0.6 percent to 9,190,000 in the cited quarter.
