Resumption of Pak-India talks positive yet need sincerity for solid outcome: Analysts

ISLAMABAD, Dec 10 (APP): Senior political analysts have termed the announcement of Comprehensive Dialogue between Pakistan and India as ‘positive’, however stressed that sincere efforts are needed for its solid outcome.
“This development has reduced the tension between Pakistan and India to some extent. However, both the countries need to focus much more on the continuity of the process,” former ambassador Akram Zaki said Thursday in his comments on the recent resumption of Pak-India Comprehensive Dialogue.

Pakistan and India on Wednesday announced resumption of the stalled peace dialogue, which will cover issues including peace and security, confidence building measures, Jammu and Kashmir, Siachen, Sir Creek, humanitarian issues, narcotics control and religious
tourism.

Zaki said the talks, for which the procedure would be laid out during the meeting of foreign secretaries, could later include other components to the dialogue.

He said India would focus on expediting trial of Mumbai suspects and would also seek trade access to Afghanistan. “With such issues on the table, serious efforts will be
required from both sides to avoid stall of talks in future,” Zaki told APP.

Former foreign secretary Salman Bashir in his comments said road connectivity upto Afghanistan could be important for India, but for Pakistan, the resolution of main issues including Jammu and Kashmir, Siachen and Sir Creek was much more important.

He said the prime ministers of Pakistan and India previously had agreed several times including at Sharm ul Sheikh, Egypt and at Thimpu, Bhutan for holding sustained dialogue process. However, he said these efforts unfortunately did not witness fruition.

He said besides leadership, a lot depended on the foreign ministries of the two countries on how they proceed on this dialogue.Senior analyst Dr Rifat Hussain said the resumption of
dialogue was a breakthrough in a manner that it ended the deadlock between Pakistan and India.

However, he said the real breakthrough could only be achieved when all issues would be discussed with political maturity. Analyst Lt Gen (retd) Abdul Qayyum termed continuity of Pak- India dialogue vital for peace of South Asia.

He said due to international pressure, India agreed for the talks of National Security Advisors in Bangkok.
