Prime Minister pays respect at Independence Monument

TASHKENT, Nov 18 (APP): Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday laid wreath at the Monument of Independence and Humanism at the Mustaqillik Square here.
Located in centre of the city, the Monument is a symbol of Uzbekistan’s freedom, independence and future. The monument contains a statue depicting a happy mother holding
her baby which shows human love.Prime Minister, who is on a two-day official visit here, was received by Hakim (Mayor) of Tashkent city Ravshan Usmanov as he reached the square housing Uzbek Senate and offices of various ministries.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by his spouse Begum Kulsoom Nawaz,
Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi, National Security Advisor Lt. Gen. (Retd) Nasser Khan Janjua and Pakistan’s Ambassador Riaz Bukhari.
Hakim Bukhari briefed the Prime Minister about the Monument, its history
and importance.
The Prime Minister later left for the historic city of Samarkand on the
second leg of his visit.
Earlier known as Lenin Square, the Monument was renamed as Independence
Square (Mustakillik Maydoni) in 1992 following the declaration of independence in 1991.
Lenin’s monument here was dismantled and an Independence Monument
containing a globe showing Uzbekistan’s borders was installed.
Independence Square is a venue for hosting major events like Uzbekistan
Independence Day and New Year celebrations.
