MINURSO welcomes Pakistan’s Major General Jawwad Ahmed as new force commander

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 18 (APP):The UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) welcomed its new force commander, Major General Jawwad Ahmed of Pakistan, with a military parade at the Mission’s Headquarters in Laayoune.
According to a message received on Thursday, the ceremony was attended by MINURSO Chief of Mission Support (CMS), Ron Misty Kamwendo of Malawi; Force Chief of Staff (FCOS), Captain (N) ASA D. Kim; and MINURSO military and civilian personnel.
In their respective speeches, the CMS and FCOS welcomed Major General Ahmed to the Mission. They stressed the central role of the military component in supporting MINURSO’s mandate and highlighted the Force Commander’s extensive and relevant professional background.
In his remarks, Major General Jawwad Ahmed said he was honoured to assume the position and reaffirmed his commitment to serving the cause of peace under the principles of the UN Charter.
He also expressed his eagerness to visit the Mission’s team sites across the territory and learn from Mission representatives to gain a deeper understanding of the Mission’s work and challenges.
