Ethiopia forms new federal government, Abiy Ahmed elected PM for five-year term

ISLAMABAD, Oct 06 (APP):Ethiopia has formed a new federal government following the inaugural session of the 7th House of Peoples’ Representatives, which elected Dr. Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister for another five-year term.
The first regular inaugural session of the House was held in Addis Ababa, marking the formation of the new Federal Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, said a press release.
The election of the prime minister followed Ethiopia’s 7th General Elections, in which more than 54 million registered voters participated. The Prosperity Party won 438 of the 486 contested seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives.
Voting was held across 1,139 constituencies, including 501 constituencies for the House of Peoples’ Representatives and 638 for regional councils.
According to the Ethiopian government, international observer missions, including those of the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), endorsed the electoral process as transparent.
Addressing the inaugural session, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the election process had strengthened Ethiopia’s democratic culture despite the challenges faced by the country.
He said winning and losing political parties were natural outcomes of a democratic contest, but emphasized that the country as a whole should move forward together.
The prime minister said Ethiopia could overcome its national challenges through unity and collective efforts, stressing the importance of solidarity among its people.
He also said Ethiopia’s position in East Africa was based on its own strength, resilience and popular support, adding that the country would continue to contribute to regional peace and stability.
In his felicitation message, Ethiopian Ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Oumer H. Oba congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the parliamentary leadership and members of the House of Peoples’ Representatives on taking oath for their five-year term.
The ambassador said the formation of the new government reflected, in his view, the strength of Ethiopia’s democratic system and the people’s commitment to democratic norms and values.
He wished the people of Ethiopia continued peace, prosperity and development, along with greater national unity and social cohesion.
