Police spokesman Chris Togneri said a suspect is in custody, adding there are “multiple casualties inside the synagogue,” in the Squirrel Hill area, according to American media reports.
Squirrel Hill is considered a Jewish enclave in the city of Pittsburgh, and is home to around a third of all Jewish residents in the city.
Local CBS-TV affiliate KDKA reported that eight people were dead and others wounded, including police officers who exchanged gunfire with the gunman.

US President Donald Trump tweeted that he was monitoring the situation and urged residents in Squirrel Hill to remain sheltered in place.
Police sources told KDKA-TV that the suspected shooter made an anti-Jewish remark upon beginning the attack, as he entered the building and opened fire.
