BEIJING, Jan 24 (APP):China on Wednesday said that it attached great importance to the security of peacekeepers and supported the United Nations in taking effective measures to enhance safety and security of peacekeepers.
The security measures included improving the system-wide command system, enhancing emergency command capabilities, coordinating with troop-contributing countries and other countries, strengthening follow-up and judgment on the security situation in the region, Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Hua Chunying said during her daily press briefing here.
She said that early warning and information sharing, and improve the ability of wounded people to rescue in dangerous environments were other safety measures.
The spokesperson said that China always supported the UN peacekeeping operations with concrete action, adding, “China has dispatched nearly 40,000 peacekeepers to the program.”
She informed that thirteen officers and four police officers had successively given their valuable lives during the peacekeeping mission.
Hua Chunying said that recently, the UN Secretary-General has commanded the former UN peacekeeping operations to study the security of peacekeepers and submitted a report.
“China is seriously studying the relevant reports and will actively participate in the discussions,” she added.
Responding to a question about establishment of a new mechanism for investigating issue of Syrian chemical weapons, she remarked that China’s position on chemical weapons was consistent and clear.
“We oppose any country, organization or individual and, in any event, use chemical weapons for any purpose and claim that a comprehensive, impartial and objective investigation of the chemical attack should be carried out based on conclusive and credible evidence,” she added.
The spokesperson opined that the unity of the Security Council was an important guarantee for the political settlement of the Syrian issue.
“We hope all parties in the Security Council will step up consultations and work together to push the Security Council to send a clear and unanimous signal on specific issues including Syria’s chemical weapons issue, humanitarian and political developments, and provide strong political support for the overall solution to the Syrian issue.”
