“Bomb Cyclone” Ushers In a Deeper Freeze Across New York Region

NEW YORK, Jan 5 (APP):The bomb cyclone storm that dumped more than a foot of snow on parts of the New York region took the area on Friday into a deep freeze that will keep the roads and streets covered with a sheet of snow and ice for days.
“This is a serious, serious storm,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference. “We expect tough conditions for days to come, particularly in terms of cold.”
“When it’s this cold, the salt doesn’t have as much effect,” Mayor de Blasio said. “I really do encourage people to stay off the roads.”
Thursday’s blizzard blanketed the region with snow and created whiteout conditions through much of the New York region, with wind gusts reaching 50 miles-per-hour.
With the wind chill, temperatures felt like a bone-numbing minus-20 degrees on Friday , making it nearly impossible to thaw out the icy streets.
Icy temperatures will stick around on Saturday, which is forecast to see a high of 15 degrees and a potential record-breaking low of minus-1 degree overnight. That spells perilous conditions for city residents potentially venturing out in their cars this weekend on packed snow, raising the possibility of a lot of skidding.
But with sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph, it’ll feel as cold as minus-20 again.
“We are predicting a record low come Saturday night-Sunday morning,” AccuWeather senior meteorologist Dave Dombek said.
“Two words that sum it up are: bitter cold.”
