Water crisis risks across Gulf region grow amid ongoing conflict: UN

UNITED NATIONS, Apr 06 (APP): The UN socio-economic development arm in the western Asia region (ESCWA) has highlighted growing concerns for water security across the Gulf region as the US-Israel war on Iran continues.

Gulf countries are among the most water-scarce in the world and rely heavily on desalination, with nearly 40 million people depending on it for drinking water, ESCWA said in a report. Any disruption – whether from damage to energy infrastructure, contamination of seawater or direct strikes on facilities – could severely affect supply, it was pointed out.

Desalination plants are closely linked to power systems, making them vulnerable to energy disruptions. The report also warns that falling missile debris, environmental incidents or attacks near critical infrastructure could interrupt operations.

Indirect risks are also significant, the report said, adding that oil spills or radioactive contamination could affect seawater used for desalination.

Meanwhile, displacement and overcrowded shelters – particularly in Lebanon – are placing additional strain on access to safe water and sanitation.
