BEIJING, Jun 26 (APP):China on Friday said it was ready to support Bangladesh’s Teesta River comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation project, stressing that cooperation between Beijing and Dhaka did not target any third party and should remain free from external interference.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun made the remarks at a regular media briefing while responding to a question regarding reports that China and Bangladesh had reached an understanding on cooperation related to the Teesta River project during Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s official visit to China.
The question referred to concerns reportedly raised by India, noting that the Teesta River flows close to the India-Bangladesh border and India’s northeastern region, and asked whether the issue had been discussed by the Chinese and Bangladeshi leaders.
Guo said he had already briefed the media on Prime Minister Rahman’s visit, during which the two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in a wide range of sectors.
“China stands ready to seek greater synergy in development strategies with Bangladesh and step up exchange and cooperation in such areas as economy and trade, water conservancy and livelihood,” he said.
He noted that the comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation of the Teesta River was an important livelihood project that the Bangladeshi side attaches great importance to.
“China is ready to do what it can to support this project,” the spokesperson said.
Guo emphasized that China-Bangladesh cooperation was not directed against any other country.
“I would like to stress that China-Bangladesh cooperation does not target any third party and should be free from third party influence,” he added.
