Pakistan stresses diplomacy over conflict at informal UNSC meeting on Russia-Ukraine war

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 15 (APP):Pakistan told an informal meeting of the UN Security Council that its stance on the five-year-old Russia-Ukraine war remains rooted in an unwavering conviction that dialogue and diplomacy are the only paths to a peaceful resolution.
“We have consistently expressed our concerns on the conflict in Ukraine, its humanitarian and other associated consequences for the region and beyond,” Pakistani delegate Muhammad Kamran Taj told the 15-member Council on Wednesday.
The meeting on “Piercing the Blind Spots of Violations of International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law in the Context of the Ukrainian Crisis” was convened by Russia under Arria-Formula format named after a former Venezuelan Ambassador to the UN, Diego Arriva.
Arria-Formula meetings are informal that enable Security Council members to have a frank and private exchange of views on relevant subjects.
In his remarks, Kamran Taj, a counsellor at the Pakistan Mission to the UN, said the recent escalation in hostilities had compounded the misery for the civilian population affected by this conflict.
“We are alarmed by the disproportionate impacts on all civilians as a result of continued fighting”, he said, underscoring that all efforts must be made to remedy their plight.
All parties must fully comply with their obligations under the Internal Humanitarian Law, the Pakistani delegate said.
“We reiterate our call for bringing this conflict to an end at the earliest, and for a just and lasting settlement, consistent with the UN Charter, international law, and relevant multilateral agreements, acceptable to all relevant parties and corresponding to the security interests of all sides,” Kamran Taj added.
