Nepalese consulate in New York holds memorial for mountaineers lost on Pakistan’s Broad Peak
NEW YORK, Aug 10 (APP):The Consulate General of Nepal in New York on Sunday organized a solemn memorial to honour the 10 mountaineers from China, Nepal, the United States, Oman and Pakistan who tragically lost their lives in an avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak.
The avalanche struck the international expedition attempting a summit push on the world’s 12th-highest peak. Among those who lost their lives was renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja, and Pakistan’s Sohail Sakhi.
Following a days-long and highly dangerous recovery operation hampered by severe weather and hazardous mountain conditions, the Pakistan Army and specialized ground teams successfully airlifted several of the climbers’ remains to Skardu.
Expressing profound sorrow at the event, Pakistan’s Consul General in New York, Aamer Ahmed Atozai, paid tribute to their courage and spirit and conveyed condolences to their families.
Other speakers at the memorial thanked and commended the Government of Pakistan for its prompt rescue operations and assistance extended to the mountaineers.
