LAHORE, Jul 11 (APP):The World Population Day was marked on July 11 (Friday) all over the world, including in Pakistan.
The purpose of marking the day was to highlight the problems and solutions arising from population growth. This year, the World Population Day was being celebrated with the theme of providing young people with conditions where they could freely decide to start a family.
Senior Official Population Welfare Department of the Punjab government, Aisha Rana, while talking to APP, said that Pakistan is the 5th largest country in the world in terms of population with a population of about 244 million, of which 44 percent live below the poverty line. “Growing population is a serious problem. If it is not controlled, we will be more vulnerable to serious problems including climate change, food shortages, water shortages, malnutrition, unemployment, and infant mortality. Along with practical measures, there is also a need to raise awareness among the people.”
It should be noted that since the first census, Pakistan’s population is expected to increase 8 times by 2027.
The World Population Day is an annual event, observed on July 11 every year, which seeks to raise awareness of global population issues. The first event was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989.
